The rear-paddle wheel steamer Hercules, built in San Francisco ii 1875.
delivered explosives to destinations on the Sacramento and San Joa uin
rivers and around San Francisco Bay. Contra Costa County Historical Society/

Hercules Powder Company bought an additional
2,500 acres and constructed a series of gullies and
reventments for safe storage of its products. It built
additional housing until some ninety-seven homes
stood on its grounds.
Before the safety measures were taken, the life of a
plant worker in a dynamite factory was a hazardous
one. From 1881 until 1919, explosions killed
fifty-nine Inmc:
1953 a single accident took the lives of
twelve men. This event became a factor in the reshaping of Hercules' future. A series ofradicalchanges
began in 1964. The company stopped making explosives and changed its name to Hercules Incorporated.
It turned to the manufacture of anhydrous ammonia
fertilizer, later selling this plant to Valley Nitrogen
Company of Fresno. The rest of the acreage went on
sale in the mid I 970s and was bought by a group of
investors by the name of Hercules Properties, Ltd.
Centex Homes of California bought the first parcel
put up for sale by the investors. When Centex offered
its new homes for sale people lined up to buy them,
attracted by the rural feeling of open space and the
affordable prices. Hercules boomed with new residents.
What has happened in Hercules in the past five
years is almost a miracle. The scene has changed
abruptly, and what one sees today has little relation
to yesterday. The townspeople walk with pride, and

162

well they should. Whatever it has taken to convert the
old into the new, they have done.
Today the old employee housing is restored. The
architecture is Queen Anne and Colonial Revival.
The developer won the Grand Prize in Renaissance
1985, awarded by the National Association of Homebuilders Magazine, from among 100 contestants.
Hercules' Refugio Valley Park is the city's principal park, but there are neighborhood parks as well:
Ohlone, Woodfield, and Foxboro. A bay front park
is planned. It will be a twenty-acre shoreline park
with trails leading to Briones Regional Park, nine
miles away.
Refugio Valley Park is a beautiful eucalyptus-lined
valley, stretching from the bay up through the hills.
The valley serves asa "town green." The combination
of deciduous and evergreen trees is an attractive
feature.
In the park is a pavilion built in classical design.
Columns hold up a dome roof, reminiscent of classical structures in Washington, D.C. A lake and two
fountains further the resemblance. Hercules can be
justly proud of its award for outstanding design of a
recreational facility, received from the California
Parks and Recreation Society.
High quality homes with well-manicured lawns
terrace the once dry grassy hillsides. In 1985, 452
homes were built in Hercules. The population is now
